This was why I got up at the crack of dawn and taking a four-hour van ride. The Damnoen Saduak floating market is 80 km southwest of Bangkok in Ratchaburi province. What did I do during the long van ride, sleep till we got to the canal to take the long-tail boat.
During the long-tail boat ride to market, we passed traditional teak houses and local people going about their morning business of washing clothes in the canal. They also bathe and wash their dishes in the same water.
This is the best known destination in Ratchaburi where timeless lifestyle of Thai people can be observed along the canals. The floating market, approximately 400 metres and operates every morning till noon.During the long-tail boat ride to market, we passed traditional teak houses and local people going about their morning business of washing clothes in the canal. They also bathe and wash their dishes in the same water.
A totally chaotic scene with small 'khlongs' or canals filled with boats laden with fresh produce, each jockeying for position and paddled by ladies ready to stop and bargain at a moment's notice. It's colourful, noisy, touristy but great fun.
