Mata Puteh At Sungei Buloh

I use to love watching these birds in cages in a pet shop while growing up. However, as an adult I prefer to see birds free and in their natural environment. Man kind has destroyed many species and sometimes that are the inevitable accidents where animals are intentionally or unintentionally released back into the wild. The local population of Mata Putehs or Oriental White-eyes are considered feral as the indigenous population died out a long time ago due to the uncontrolled bird trade.Even though they are considered feral, I for one am thrilled to see these birds back in the ecosystem. I came upon a small flock actively hunting insects at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and I proceeded to try to catch these birds through my lens. They are small and they are fast, it was quite trying to follow these tiny birds through a view finder but I did get some decent chances with this flock.

Hmmm...
Very Nice Pictures...

I've also been trying to photograph birds nowadays. One of them I've been aiming is the Yellow-Vented Bulbul. They are very common here at our school, but whenever I see them, I may not have my camera with me.

Can you advice me, is it better to shoot birds with or without flash when I'm using a Digital Camera?

Hi Shawn,

Thanks.

Most photographers shoot with flash when they have the super long lens to given the camera more light.

I find that if I can get close enought to my subject, using no flash gets me more opportunities. However, that is assuming that there is enough ambient light to work with.

Well, most birdwatchers and other proffesionals have better camera than mine, like the DSLR etc... For a digital camera like mine, I don't get clear picures when I shoor from a distance as the more I zoom in, the more the image quality worsens.

Anyway, today I finally did manage to shoot the Yellow-Vented Bulbuls. But my images were not too good, even having treid with and without flash.

I also went to West Coast Park today. Guess what were my finds?

-A reticulated Python high up on the tree,
-A Yellow-Crested Cockatoo,
-Huge Herons,
-And many more species of birds.

Anyway, why don't you try West Coast Park? Its a good place to find birds.

Hi Shawn, some day you will get a dSLR too.

I would love to but distance and time are key to where I go. At the moment two cats are ill. One with renal failure n the other is dying of old age. I need to take her to the vet to put her out of her misery. She can't eat nor hold down water.

Well, someday...
I am only 14 and hence my parents won't buy me such an expensive camera so quickly. I'll have to wait very long.

Anyway, I feel sorry for your cat. If you do have a pet, than you will have to go through these painful events. Its just life. Every single living organism will die one day. Its ok, don't worry.

Shawn, your parents are teaching you well. Grow up first. :-) My other cat has already moved in to where Meow use to live. Sweetie has taken over all the prime spots.
